Dear GPEA Members,
The news of workers finding a noose in a classroom is beyond disturbing.
The community knows that teachers and students have not been in the building for many weeks, yet this becomes another opportunity to speak out against racism.
We find it important to respond with our voice, below is the press release we will be sharing with local newspapers.
“The discovery of a noose in a classroom at Grosse Pointe South High School earlier this week brought home the stark reality of racism that the entire country is struggling with. While our nation is reawakening to the reality of institutional racism–even in its subtlest forms–the appearance of a noose has never been subtle. It symbolizes the violence and hate of racism at its most extreme form. To discover that symbol of violence and hate in what is supposed to be a safe learning space is unconscionable. While we can work to cleanse our school buildings of the deadly corona virus, this incident shows that we have even more work ahead of us to cleanse our schools and our society of the scourge of racism.”
